The Process
Free telephone screening assessment with parents/carers. This is arranged to take place at a mutually suitable time. Through this discussion I will ask questions to understand your child’s situation and assess their ability to perform their daily activities. If it is deemed that occupational therapy is suitable, then further information on what can be offered will be shared, along with the price list. This information will be emailed to you, and if you wish to take up the service, then you simply need to get back in touch. There is no obligation to take-up Telos Therapy Service following the telephone assessment.
If employing Telos Therapy Service:
Initial home visit to meet the child with their parents/carers. The time will be geared to make the time spent together comfortable for your child. During this meeting clinical observations will be performed, along with some assessments. This may take the form of a play-based activity, or for older children a formal assessment activity. In either case these will determine the child’s abilities/limitations.
If necessary a school visit will take place to assess the child within their education environment. This is to observe their engagement with formal learning, interaction with their peers, and response to tasks required of them. A conversation with the Teacher, Teaching Assistant and/or SENCO will take place as part of further information gathering.
The report with clinical observations, recommendations and (if required) a tailor-made treatment package will be created. A written report will be provided up to 6 weeks following the assessment process.
A follow-up and feedback meeting with parents/carers can also take place to discuss the report. This may also include a representative from the school being spoken with either at the same time or separately.
If occupational therapy treatment is deemed appropriate, then a period of interventions can commence.
The Occupational Therapy Process
1 - Assessment, this is to understand your child's functional, cognitive, emotional, sensory needs/abilities/barriers. Assessment also considers what they are good at, and what impact any dysfunction causes upon their daily life. The assessment also takes into consideration the environmental factors of the home, school and elsewhere, seeking to understand how these help or hinder their development.
2 - Planning and Goal Setting, These are always agreed with the child and other important people in their lives, such as parents/carers, teachers etc... The goals are centred around the child and built in a way so as to make them as natural and enjoyable to work towards as possible.
3 - Treatment, the treatment stage (if occupational therapy treatment is deemed needed, and commissioned by the parent/carer) is undertaken with the child and in partnership with their important people. Treatment is run at a location and frequency which fits into the life of the child. Each session is tailor-made to work towards their goals, and a variety of evidence-based research is applied to ensure the techniques are employed appropriately.
4 - Review, after an agreed period of time. The progress is reviewed against the child's goals. This is an opportunity to celebrate successes, and make any adjustments based on progress made, or difficulties encountered along the way.
5 - Discharge, after the agreed amount of time has passed, or the goals have been met. A final discharge report is written, offering information on what has taken place, and any recommendations to support further and onward development of the child.
